The Pumas prodigy
Born in Mexico City on July 11, 1958, Sánchez came through the Pumas UNAM academy and won his first league title at 19. His acrobatic finishes and relentless training made him a superstar before he ever left Mexico. In 1981, Spain came calling.
Conquering Spain
After four strong seasons at Atlético Madrid — including his first Pichichi as La Liga's top scorer — Sánchez crossed the city to Real Madrid in 1985. What followed was a dynasty: five consecutive La Liga titles and four more scoring crowns. His 38-goal season in 1989-90 won him the European Golden Boot.
The bicycle kick and the somersault
