Chicharito: The Legend of Mexican Football and His Path to Success in the Premier League

Football resting in the back of a goal net

Javier Hernández, widely known as Chicharito, is one of the most successful Mexican footballers of all time. His journey from Guadalajara to Manchester United made him a global star, and his goals made him Mexico's all-time top scorer. This is the story of Chicharito's path to Premier League success and beyond.

From the Chivas academy to Old Trafford

Born on June 1, 1988, in Guadalajara, Hernández came through the Chivas academy, following his father and grandfather — both Mexican internationals. In 2010, Manchester United signed him, making him the first Mexican player in the club's history. The nickname "Chicharito", meaning little pea, honors his father "Chícharo".

Premier League champion

Chicharito's impact in England was immediate: 20 goals in his first season and a Premier League title. He won a second league crown in 2012-13 and became famous for poaching crucial goals off the bench. Sir Alex Ferguson called him one of his best signings.

Real Madrid and the European tour

A loan to Real Madrid in 2014-15 brought a Champions League quarterfinal winner against Atlético Madrid. Later stops included Bayer Leverkusen — where he scored at an elite rate — West Ham United, Sevilla and the LA Galaxy. Everywhere he went, the goals followed.
